I am a resident of Saint Stephen, NB, Canada and like many of my neighbors, I have experienced firsthand the damage our deteriorating road infrastructure can cause. My vehicle has suffered from this neglect and so have those of my neighbors. We are often forced to swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid potholes and sunken areas - a dangerous maneuver that puts us all at risk.

Not only is this situation damaging our personal property and endangering lives, it's also impacting our local economy. The poor state of our roads discourages tourism and commerce - two vital components for the prosperity of Saint Stephen. Our property values are also taking a hit as potential buyers are deterred by the state of our infrastructure.

Moreover, there is an environmental concern here too. The constant need for repairs means more construction work which contributes to air pollution from dust particles and heavy machinery emissions.

According to Transport Canada's data (2016), well-maintained roads reduce vehicle operating costs by 18% on average while improving safety conditions significantly. It's time we demand better for ourselves and future generations in Saint Stephen.

We urge local authorities to prioritize road maintenance in their budget planning process immediately. We deserve safe streets that enhance rather than hinder our quality of life in this beautiful town we call home.
