Improve the Quality of School Meals and Install Air Conditioners in Garfield Schools
The Issue
As a concerned parent with a child in the school system, I am deeply troubled by the current state of our children's nutrition and learning environment in Garfield, NJ. Our children are being served stale cereal bars, uncooked or overcooked food, and more fried options than fresh ones. Alarmingly, our meals have double or even triple the national standard for sodium count which can lead to heart disease. How can they say that a milk variety for Pre K students is 1% or 2%. They don`t offer chocolate milk even though it is on the envelope
It is disheartening to see that surrounding towns who use the same service and pay less taxes and receive better quality food than we do here in Garfield. We believe that every child deserves access to nutritious meals regardless of their zip code.
Furthermore, it is crucial for our children's comfort and concentration that air conditioners be installed in all classrooms. Learning should not be compromised due to uncomfortable temperatures. There was over 8 million dollars put aside for the air conditioners. This money since has vanished with no explanation to the public and no record of it being there in the first place.
If you watch the link below, you will see the food provider present a slide show that seems great if followed, this is not being followed. They lied to the parents at the meeting and presented a display of food claiming that is what all the students eat. I have attached pictures below of the food quality in all different schools in Garfield. Feel free to send me other pictures of the food quality to TakeActionGarfield@gmail.com. Toward the end of the video after the public comments you will also hear the board member implying that they don`t believe there is an issue because it is only the same people coming to the meetings and they don`t acknowledge what is on Facebook.

A Board when confronted with an issue, and clearly they know its an issue to have the food provider come down to make a presentation, should be surveying the parents and finding a solution. We urge you to take immediate action on these matters. Let us prioritize our children's health by improving meal quality and ensuring a conducive learning environment through installing air conditioners in all classrooms. Please sign this petition if you agree that change needs to happen now! If the current members do not want to fix the problems and find a way to do it without raising taxes then remember that on Election day!
