By signing this petition, you will help demonstrate to our county commissioners that our community believes the current shelter is inadequate. Before moving forward with unnecessary construction in Phase II (such as a gazebo, picnic area, water feature, etc.), it is essential that they first address the issues with Phase I.

We are coming to you not just as members of the community, but also as dedicated volunteers and animal advocates. We have all personally witnessed the day-to-day struggle of the animals in our local animal shelter, where conditions are far from humane. Our tax dollars are being utilized, yet the situation remains inadequate. 

If you have recently visited the Fayette County Animal Shelter, you may have noticed renderings for Phase II of the Animal Shelter Masterplan Improvement project displayed in the lobby. These plans are showcased to encourage community feedback, which will be collected and shared with the commissioners before construction for this phase begins. 

The Fayette County Animal Task Force reviewed the proposed shelter plans and made several key recommendations for improvement. These include:

Cat Kennels: Larger individual kennels to meet industry standards.

Dog and Puppy Kennels: Reconfiguration to include double compartments for sleeping and bathroom areas.

Laundry Room: Upgrades to plumbing, electrical, and ventilation to support commercial appliances.

Drainage: Proper routing of drains in the dog area to ensure effective waste removal.

Outdoor Kennels: Improvements to grading to prevent flooding and muddy conditions.

Quarantine Areas: Separate spaces for puppies, dogs, kittens, and cats to prevent disease spread.

Operations: Shelter needs software to track intake, medical records, and volunteer information.

Outdoor Amenities: Addition of shade trees in the dog-walking area and a full-property fence. The proposed split rail fence should be replaced with chain-link or appropriate fencing. The walking paths should be made of mulch instead of slate chips to prevent injury.

Excess Features: The pavilion, gazebo, obstacle course, picnic area, and water feature should be removed, with funds redirected to animal-focused improvements.
