Having recently visited the Dehiwala Zoo, I was deeply moved and disturbed by the suffering and distress visible in the eyes of the animals. Majestic and robust animals, like lions and tigers, appeared to be starving, showing clear signs of malnutrition and physical deterioration. The environment, far-removed from being conducive, was brimming with signs of neglect and mismanagement.

It was clear that the animals lacked sufficient energy, appearing lonely and inactive, indicating the psychological stress they are enduring. This is not only a violation of their basic rights but also a gross mistreatment of the incredible biodiversity that we are privileged to witness.

The prevailing conditions at the Dehiwala Zoo need immediate attention. The inhumane standards of living and lack of proper nourishment for the animals are a grave concern. We urge the zoological department to act swiftly, adhering to global standards of captive animal care, and ensuring that the animals are provided adequate food and proper treatment. We must rectify this situation and redeem the sad state of affairs at the Dehiwala Zoo.

Moreover, the freedom from undue suffering is a basic animal right. As compatriots in this planet and as superior beings with the gift of consciousness, it is our duty to provide them with a life free from starvation and imprisonment.

We demand that steps are taken towards the systematic and planned improvement in the living standards of these animals, rendering immediate medical attention where needed, and implementing a stronger course of action towards maintaining the health, mental well-being, and overall vitality of the living creatures in the zoo.
