Recently, I found myself in the heart-wrenching situation of having to engage with the animal welfare authorities in Northern Ireland, due to a case of animals not being appropriately cared for. Despite urgent calls and continuous follow-ups for four weeks, the poor creatures are still in the same premises, suffering, without any substantial intervention from the concerned authorities.

It is no secret that the animal welfare circumstances in our region are not up to par. Our system for dealing with animal abuse and neglect cases is insufficient, often resulting in prolonged suffering for our most vulnerable inhabitants. The disappointing manner in which cases are handled and the unsatisfactory outcomes after investigations reflect a disturbing slack in our system.

The ongoing poor response to animal welfare issues in Northern Ireland is a telling sign we need reform. For too long, these innocent lives have borne the brunt of our systemic inefficiencies, a reality that should be unacceptable to us all.
