Every time I visit PetSmart, I am disheartened by the sight of the betta fish crammed into small, inadequate containers. These vibrant creatures, who should be living healthy and active lives, often appear sad and listless. I once purchased a betta fish from the store, hoping to provide it with a better home, but unfortunately, it only survived for a year despite my best efforts. This experience has made me realize that the conditions these fish endure are far from ideal and desperately need improvement.most betta fish live in small cups with little space to move and explore

This issue is not isolated to just bettas; it extends to many of the aquatic animals and small pets sold at PetSmart. Proper tank conditions are crucial for the health and well-being of all animals. Inappropriate tank sizes, lack of environmental enrichment, and poor water quality can lead to stress, illness, and premature death.

The Humane Society and other animal welfare organizations emphasize the importance of providing adequate space and environments for pets. Studies have shown that the minimum recommended tank size for a single betta fish is at least 5 gallons, far larger than the cramped containers they are currently housed in. Additionally, regulated water temperature, proper filtration, and enrichment items like plants and hiding spots are essential for their well-being.

PetSmart has the opportunity to be a leader in animal care standards. By acting to improve the living conditions for the animals they sell, they can set a positive example for the pet retail industry. We urge PetSmart to:
