Improve Student Safety! Install a Traffic Light at College Street & Keith Road

The Issue

We, the undersigned students and staff members of Texas Healthtech Institute, located at 9615 and 9595 College St, Beaumont, TX 77707, respectfully petition the City Council to install a traffic light at the intersections of College St and Keith Rd, located near our campus. This intersection has become increasingly dangerous for drivers, particularly during peak commuting hours and class transition times. We have witnessed several major accidents at this intersection.

College Street (Hwy 90) is a very busy road and at this crossing the speed limit suddenly drops to 55 MPH. Many drivers before entering into this speed limit (55MPH) will be driving at 75 MPH or higher on east bound HWY 90. The absence of a traffic light not only causes confusion and congestion but also poses a serious safety risk. High traffic speeds, limited visibility, and the lack of clear pedestrian crossing signals contribute to an unsafe environment that puts lives at risk.

In recent months, there have been several accidents at this location, highlighting the urgent need for action. As students and staff, we are deeply concerned for the safety of our community, and we believe a traffic light would significantly reduce the risk of accidents, improve pedestrian flow, and contribute to a safer campus environment.

We respectfully request that the City Council prioritize a traffic study at this intersection and consider installing a traffic light if warranted. The safety of students and community members is paramount, and we believe that this measure will contribute positively to the growth, development, and quality of life in our city.

Thank you for considering our petition. We look forward to seeing steps taken toward making Beaumont a safer place for all residents and students.
