Improve Student and Faculty Safety at York University

The Issue

This petition is a request to the York University Administration for better access to resources for students and faculty in terms of violence and safety on campus. York University has insufficient resources on campus and lacks 24/7 accessibility for students experiencing or witnessing violence. The Centre for Sexual Violence Response, Support, & Education; Student Counselling, Health, & Well-being; The office of Community Relations; and York Student Accessibility Services are insufficient to provide the assistance we require. None of these campus resources are accessible after 4:30pm; few students know about the existing supports; and those that do access these resources do not get the support they deserve. We demand a commitment to the safety of students and faculty on campus by:

- Ensuring that existing support services and resources are accurately communicated and widely disseminated to students (weekly newsletter/emails, flyers, QR codes)

- Enhancing mental health and survivor supports for all students by making these available 24/7 with in-person and virtual options

- Ensuring that all staff and faculty know how to respond to student disclosures

- Reviewing and improving the reporting process for sexual and gender-based violence, ensuring that it is survivor-centered, empathetic and transparent

- Improving access and safety for people using gender-neutral washrooms, including having them in every building and making them easier to find

Addressing these issues is a stepping stone that will allow us to create a safer campus environment during all academic sessions. If there is a lack of initiative taken by the administration to act upon these requests, further actions will be taken to educate and raise awareness.
