Improve Safety & Reduce Speed on Highway 60 in Morristown, Minnesota
The Issue
I am a lifelong resident of Morristown, Minnesota, and I am asking for immediate attention to the dangerous conditions on Highway 60 where residents must turn into and out of town.
The intersections near Dollar General, Bottom of hill that leads out to Ahlmans Gun Shop, and the nearby storage units have become increasingly unsafe. Many community members have witnessed or experienced accidents and near-misses at these locations. There have been serious injuries and even fatalities over the years, and the pattern continues.
Turning onto or off of Highway 60 to enter Morristown is one of the most stressful and dangerous parts of driving in our community. Traffic frequently does not slow down, illegally passes on the shoulder, and drivers attempting to turn can be difficult to see when the cars behind them are often driving at high speeds. I have personally experienced multiple close calls, including situations where I was nearly hit by semis. Many residents share similar experiences.
This is not an isolated concern—it is an ongoing safety issue affecting the entire community. As more young drivers begin using these roads, the concern continues to grow. I’m asking for community support and change before another person is seriously injured.
We are respectfully requesting that the Minnesota Department of Transportation conduct a formal safety review of Highway 60 through Morristown and consider the following improvements:
A speed study and potential reduction in speed limits entering and exiting Morristown
Evaluation and installation of turn lanes at high-risk intersections,
Improved signage, lighting, or warning systems to increase driver awareness
We are asking for proactive action to prevent further accidents, injuries, and loss of life. The current conditions are not safe, and something needs to change.
Please help make Highway 60 safer for the residents of Morristown.

🚨 Morristown Highway 60 Safety Concern – The Data Speaks 🚨
I pulled crash data for the stretch of Highway 60 going through Morristown over roughly the last 10 years, and honestly… it’s concerning.
📊 Here’s what the numbers show (10-year period):
38 total crashes
96 people involved
66 vehicles
2 fatalities
2 serious injuries
⚠️ What kind of crashes are happening?
68% involve hitting something that isn’t another vehicle (ditches, poles, etc.)
26% involve another vehicle
👉 This points to more than just traffic — it suggests speed and road design issues
🚗 Speed is a big factor
Nearly 79% of crashes happen in 55–70 MPH zones
👉 This is exactly where people are slowing down or trying to turn into town
🧊 Road conditions weren’t the main issue
71% of crashes happened on dry roads
👉 So this isn’t just winter driving — it’s happening in normal conditions
⚠️ Injuries & severity
50% had no injury
BUT:
2 people lost their lives
2 had serious injuries
👉 That’s too many for one stretch of road in a small community
💬 Bottom line:
Over the past decade, this stretch of Highway 60 going into and out of Morristown has shown consistent safety concerns. People are driving highway speeds while others are trying to slow down, turn, or enter town.
We need to start pushing for:
✔️ Reduced speed limits coming into town
✔️ Better signage and warnings
✔️ Safer turn access / road design improvements
If you live in or travel through Morristown, this affects you.
Let’s start the conversation and push for change before more people get hurt.
