Having lived in this community for over twenty years, I have witnessed more than my fair share of tragic accidents at the intersections around Ardrey Kell Road and Blakeney Shopping Center in South Charlotte. This area, particularly between Community House Road and Providence Road, is fraught with danger, both from the heavy traffic and inadequate infrastructure designed to handle it.

Our friends, neighbors, children – the very community that makes South Charlotte cherished – are the ones paying the price for these deficiencies. They have been injured, and far too many have lost their lives. The time to act is now; we must address these issues before another life is unnecessarily lost.

Currently, there are two exits and entrances to the Blakeney Shopping Center that cross four lanes of heavy traffic. The complexity and risk associated with merely crossing the street here are alarmingly high. There are practical solutions available to mitigate these dangers, including the implementation of more lighting, medians, roundabouts, and speed bumps.

Lighting improvements can drastically increase visibility for both drivers and pedestrians, reducing the likelihood of accidents during early morning or late-night hours. Introducing medians can provide safe havens for those crossing the street and help organize traffic flow, while roundabouts could be pivotal in controlling speed and improving the general flow efficiency. Lastly, speed bumps can ensure that vehicles approach these busy intersections with necessary caution.

Statistics highlight the need for action: intersections with insufficient lighting and traffic control see significantly higher accident rates. It's a preventable issue with concrete solutions, yet action must be taken to implement them. We owe it to our loved ones, present and future, to bring about these changes.
