Improve Safety on Ameen Ave vicinity: Install Speedbumps, Crosswalks ‘Kids at Play’ Signs
The Issue
Every morning, kids gather at the school bus stop on Ameen Ave in our neighborhood and surrounding streets, waiting for a journey to education and growth. As they excitedly chatter away or hurriedly finish up their last-minute homework, speeding cars whizz past, too close for comfort. I personally have come to fear this sight as a parent; after all, our children should not be in harm's way when they are simply heading for school or playing in the park.
One chilling afternoon, my daughter and I narrowly escaped being mowed down by an inconsiderate driver turning the corner at an alarming speed. This incident unfolded right in front of our house - our safe haven - which is, incidentally, across the park where kids often play and adults exercise. A similar story also unfolds at the school bus stop where impatient drivers have ignored the stop sign extended by the bus when kids are boarding.
Our neighborhood, including Ameen Ave, can no longer be treated as a speedway for reckless drivers or as a shortcut for late-night bar-hopping. The lack of traffic safeguards like speedbumps, crosswalks, and 'kids at play' signs is encouraging such dangerous behavior. Furthermore, there seems to be an absence of speed limit signs that inform drivers to slow their pace down to a safe limit.
Our plea is straightforward. Our local authorities must ensure immediate installation of speedbumps and crosswalks on Ameen Ave as well as around the park and school bus stop. Equally urgent is the need for 'kids at play' and speed limit signs to remind drivers of the precious young lives at risk.
Without these necessary measures, children will continue to be in dire danger every day, and the terrifying statistic of around 300 traffic-related fatalities annually in our state could escalate even further (source: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).
Our children, our families, and our futures lie on this road. It's up to us to ensure that safety is not compromised any longer. Thank you for your attention and support. Please sign this petition to urge the authorities to turn Ameen Ave into a safer street for all.
