Improve safety measures at Hwy 212 and Tryon Road intersection

Improve safety measures at Hwy 212 and Tryon Road intersection
The Issue
Over the past several years, the intersection of Hwy 212 and Tryon Road in Michigan City, IN, has increasingly become a site of dangerous and tragic accidents. The uptick in car collisions and pedestrians being struck is alarming and deeply concerning for all who travel in this area. As a member of this community, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating consequences that these accidents have on individuals and families. The personal stories and losses we have endured at this intersection are poignant reminders of the urgent need for change.
We, the undersigned, are calling for the immediate installation of a 4-way traffic light at the intersection of US Highway 212 and Tryon Road in Michigan City.
This intersection has become increasingly dangerous and poses a serious threat to both drivers and pedestrians due to:
A rise in motor vehicle accidents, including serious and fatal incidents
Pedestrian injuries and deaths, with extremely limited protections in place
A significant increase in traffic volume, making it difficult and unsafe to enter or cross the roadway
This area is home to a trailer park and a low-income apartment complex, where many residents rely on walking to meet basic daily needs. A nearby gas station located at or near this intersection is often the only accessible place for essentials such as food, hygiene items, and household supplies.
Despite this, there is:
No safe crossing infrastructure
No effective traffic signal to control flow
No adequate street lighting, making visibility dangerously low—especially at night
This creates a situation where residents, including families and vulnerable individuals, are forced to risk their lives simply to access basic necessities.
Additionally, traffic has increased substantially due to growing travel into nearby areas of Michigan. The expansion of cannabis retail businesses just miles from the border has brought a surge of out-of-state visitors, further increasing congestion and making this already hazardous intersection even more dangerous.
🚨 We are requesting:
A formal traffic and safety study
The installation of a 4-way traffic signal
Street lighting improvements to increase nighttime visibility
Immediate temporary safety measures until permanent solutions are in place
No one should have to risk their life for basic needs.
Our community deserves safe infrastructure, safe crossings, and proper traffic control.
We urge Michigan City officials and the Indiana Department of Transportation to prioritize this issue and expedite solutions that will protect our community—before more lives are lost. Our families, friends, and neighbors deserve a safer daily commute, free from the anxiety of potential accidents.
Please sign this petition to demand action and bring much-needed improvements to the intersection of Hwy 212 and Tryon Road for the safety and well-being of everyone in our community. Together, we can make a difference.
