Improve Safety for Cats with bylaws in BC

The Issue

Across BC thousands and thousands of cats are born on the streets/wild each year. With countless rescues and TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) groups working on taking in the kittens and trying to make a dent in the overpopulation in their communities by spaying and neutering the adult cats they come across without owners. The majority of the community cat population stems from humans neglecting to spay/neuter their cats and the lack of permanent ID (Tattoo andMicrochip) on their outdoor cats.
According to one study (click here for source) a single pair of breeding cats can turn into 420'000 in 7 years as breeding queens can have up to 3 litters a year. Thats a TON of kittens!

It's with this in mind that we are petitioning for basic bylaws across the province whether the bylaws are created at a local municipal level or by putting pressure on the provincial government to take a stand.

We are asking for the following:

  • All owned felines be spayed or neutered by a board professional by 6 months of age (medical concerns exempt) to prevent kittens having kittens.
  • All owned felines be given permanent ID (Tattoo and or microchip) at the time of neuter to ensure if they ever escape or are abandoned that we can trace them back to their owners.
