The Issue

On January 25, 2026, a heartbreaking accident occurred at the unprotected intersection of U41/Tamiami Trail and Centennial/Warrington Blvds, claiming a life. This tragic event underscores the urgent need for a collaborative investigation and overhaul of traffic management at this notorious junction, which has seen too many such incidents.

The intersection is heavily trafficked, serving as a critical conduit between residential areas and key commercial zones in Charlotte County, Florida. Despite this, it lacks crucial safety features like protective barriers, clear signage, and efficient traffic light systems, making it a perilous spot for daily commuters and pedestrians alike. The absence of these imperative safety measures continues to put lives at risk.

To rectify this, we urge Charlotte County, West Port Community Development District (CDD), West Port Homeowners Association (HOA), Kolter Development, and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to unite their efforts. These stakeholders must work together to develop a strategic traffic management plan aimed at enhancing the safety of this intersection.

The proposal should include an immediate investigation into the recent accidents' causes and a thorough review of existing traffic patterns. Moreover, implementing advanced traffic control systems and erecting appropriate physical barriers should be prioritized to calm and guide traffic effectively. Such measures could drastically reduce the likelihood of future accidents, safeguarding both residents and travelers.

Time is of the essence to prevent further loss of life. By signing this petition, you can help push for these necessary changes and hold the responsible entities accountable. Let's demand a safer intersection for our community today.

Here is an update from the MPO Director in regards to your concerns. I hope this information is helpful as this is concern to the BCC as well as the MPO: "Good morning MPO Board Members, Staff would like to inform you of recent safety concerns at the intersection of US 41 and Centennial Boulevard (O’Donnell Boulevard). In light of multiple crashes occurring within a short period, staff has contacted the FDOT District One Safety Office to request evaluation of potential interim measures that may enhance safety at this location prior to the installation of a traffic signal. FDOT’s Safety Office has acknowledged the concern and is actively reviewing possible short‑term countermeasures. The intersection currently meets signal warrants. Staff is also coordinating with Charlotte County and FDOT regarding the proposed signal at US 41- Flamingo Boulevard. Because the spacing between Flamingo Boulevard and Centennial Boulevard does not meet FDOT’s minimum signal‑spacing standards for a high‑speed arterial corridor like US 41, further technical review and discussions are required to determine whether a signal should be placed at Flamingo or Centennial. These discussions are ongoing, and additional information will be provided as it becomes available. As a reminder, this intersection will be included in the FDOT report scheduled for discussion at the March 30, 2026 MPO Board meeting. Please contact me if you have any questions or require additional information. Thanks and have a great day. Lakshmi N. Gurram MPO Director"
