The Issue

We, the undersigned residents, parents, students, and community members of Lexington County, urgently request a comprehensive safety study at the intersection of Augusta Highway (US‑1) and Charter Oak Road, directly in front of Lexington High School.

This intersection has become increasingly dangerous, with frequent and severe accidents—many involving young drivers traveling to and from the high school.

One local family has experienced this danger firsthand:

  • Their daughter has been involved in two separate accidents at this intersection.
  • Her most recent crash, resulted in her car being totaled.
  • Just two days later, a motorcycle accident occurred at the same location.
  • The wrecker driver who towed her vehicle reported that he regularly responds to crashes at this intersection.

These incidents are not isolated. They reflect a long‑standing pattern of collisions, confusion, and unsafe traffic flow—especially during school hours.

Our Request
We respectfully ask SCDOT and Lexington County to:

  1. Conduct a formal safety evaluation of this intersection
  2. Prioritize the safety and traffic improvements, needed

We believe this action will protect our students, families, and neighbors from further preventable harm.

We look forward to your response and to seeing meaningful steps taken to improve safety at this critical intersection.
