Improve safety at Randall and Red Gate

Improve safety at Randall and Red Gate
The Issue
The intersection of Randall Rd. and Red Gate Rd. in Kane County, Illinois is often regarded as one of the most dangerous intersections in the area.
Along Red Gate Road is St. Charles North High School (SCN), where many students drive to school every day. These young drivers have less experience on the road and are more likely to make poor decisions while driving. The fear of being late to school can also contribute to speeding or rushed turns. Red Gate also has 4 residential neighborhoods split along both sides of Randall, contributing to more traffic as people drive to work or school.
Randall Road is known for its fast drivers, where many move faster than the 45-50 mph speed limit. Randall Road is often busy in the morning with it being the main corridor between interstates 90 and 88 for residents in Elgin, St. Charles, Geneva, Aurora amoungst others.
The left turn from Randall onto Red Gate, one of the most common routes for SCN students to get to school, mostly operates through an unprotected turn. This is different from most surrounding intersections on Randall, where a green arrow is required to make the left turn. The unsafe nature of this turn leads to drivers turning in front of cars who are often going 10-20 mph over the speed limit.
The recent collision on Randall and Red Gate resulted in the death of SCN alum Kevin White. Sources say the crash occurred at about 3:00pm, a time when many students are traveling home from school or towards SCN for sports practices. Especially in this time of heavy traffic, the intersection could use an added layer of safety.
We, the undersigned, call on Kane County to make this intersection safer: allow only protected left turns, reduce the speed, and increase patrols at times where drivers commute to school and work.
