Improve Safety and Security of Sun Retreats Sherkston Shores

Improve Safety and Security of Sun Retreats Sherkston Shores
The Issue
This is intended to petition Sun Retreats Sherkston Shores to implement and commit to a proper security plan, in order to prevent any further injuries within its park. This is intended to protect owners, guests, employees and the surrounding residents of the Hamlet of Sherkston who are also effected.
Most recently on May 20, 2023 a stabbing occurred. An owner was beaten and stabbed by an unknown party within the park. According to the victim, Sun Retreats Sherkston security stayed in their cars honking their horns while he was beaten, sprayed with mace and stabbed. This is only one clear indication that the existing security is ill-equipped to deal with the types of situations that are repeatedly happening on Sun Retreat private property.
We as owners, guests, employees and locals to the area are banding together for the safety of all. We should all feel safe and protected, and we currently do not!
We cite the following situations as only some of the evidence of the serious issues occurring within Sun Retreats Sherkston year after year.
- Unauthorized guests seen by many, routinely accessing the resort through unmanned access points.
- Canada Day trespassing with overcrowding, multiple fights, injuries and arrests yearly.
- 2017 violence of two teens at Sherkston who assaulted police and were arrested.
- June 20, 2020 trespassers inside the resort involved in a large brawl resulting in injuries and arrests.
- July 11, 2021 fight with injured party transported to hospital.
- May 20, 2023 stabbing resulting in an owner being airlifted to hospital.
These are only some of the examples of safety concerns that are widely known. There are many more than the above.
We are petitioning for the following to occur to proactively prevent further situations from occurring:
- Sufficient security staff to visitor ratio, with proper security training.
- A visible security/police presence in all known problem areas.
- Paid duty police officers on site with additional presence on long weekends.
- Curfew enforced for anyone under age 25. (Until such time as the violence is stopped and the park is a safe place again).
- Group gatherings in common areas (Main parking lot, center courts) over 25 people should be immediately disassembled, unless authorized.
- Enforcement of access points to non-guests.
- Enforcement of wristband/owner pass policies. No exceptions.
- HD cameras located at all major sites within the resort.
- Signage indicating cameras present as well as “Private Property, No Trespassing”.
Sherkston has been a beloved family resort for many years. We all want to see it brought back to the place we all once loved, where our kids can roam free and experience the magic of the shore. We hope management will take these concerns seriously, before someone is more seriously injured - or worse.
