The Issue

A terrifying incident at Community Park in Orem, UT, a park closely tied to our family's recreational life. A young child fell from the large spider web climber, and it was a scary moment that could have ended much worse. As parents, we find ourselves constantly stationed behind our toddlers as they slide or play on platforms, anxiously ready to catch them to prevent injury. This constant vigilance is not what playtime should be. Our children deserve the freedom to play openly, without the looming fear of potential harm.

Moreover, the park's current design falls short in providing accessibility and convenience. The playground is surfaced with wood chips, a material that proves challenging for small children to navigate, as well as for parents with strollers or individuals with mobility challenges. This design inadvertently excludes and makes the park less welcoming to many.

Another critical aspect of our concern is the lack of adequate shade. In a state like Utah, where high UV levels are common, the absence of sufficient shade in the playground area not only exposes children and visitors to the dangers of sunburn but also discourages prolonged play and enjoyment of the park.

We propose urgent improvements to Community Park to address these safety concerns. A safer, age-appropriate playground design featuring rubberized surfaces would dramatically enhance safety and accessibility. Installing safer play equipment tailored to younger age groups, accompanied by expansive shade structures throughout, would mitigate the risk of sun exposure and foster inclusivity for families and individuals of varying ages and abilities.

These efforts would transform Community Park into a truly inclusive recreational facility and provide an enjoyable, safe, and welcoming environment for everyone. By investing in these updates, we commit to fostering a community space where safety, relaxation, and joy coexist.

Please sign this petition to urge the local government and relevant departments to take immediate action towards these much-needed improvements. Let’s create a positive change in our beloved Orem Park, ensuring it is a place where our children can explore, play, and grow safely.
