Improve Road Safety on Broomstick Hall Road, Waltham Abbey

Проблема

Residents of Broomstick Hall Road in Waltham Abbey are increasingly concerned about road safety on this street, particularly due to poor visibility and dangerous on-street parking.

The road is narrow, and vehicles are frequently parked along both sides, especially near bends. This significantly restricts visibility for both drivers and pedestrians and creates a hazardous environment. Drivers are often forced into the centre of the road and may feel pressured to accelerate to pass through constrained sections quickly, increasing the risk of collisions and near misses.

This road is used daily by families, children and pedestrians, including pupils walking to and from nearby schools. The current layout makes it difficult to cross the road safely and leaves very little reaction time for drivers, particularly where visibility is limited.

Residents are not calling for major construction works or long-term infrastructure projects. Instead, we are asking for practical, realistic and achievable safety measures that can be implemented more quickly and genuinely improve safety for everyone using the road.

Important clarification:

This petition is not calling for enforcement-only or revenue-driven measures. Residents are understandably concerned that simple parking bans or additional restrictions, introduced without alternatives, would merely shift the problem elsewhere and place an unfair burden on those who live on the road.

Any parking restrictions should only be considered alongside suitable alternative parking provision for residents. Safety improvements must not come at the expense of residents’ ability to park safely and reasonably near their homes. Enforcement alone does not address the root causes of unsafe driving behaviour.

We respectfully ask Essex County Council and Essex Highways to consider:

Introducing targeted parking restrictions (such as double yellow or red lines) on the most dangerous section of Broomstick Hall Road only where necessary to restore visibility, and not as a blanket measure
Providing alternative designated parking options for residents, so that safety improvements do not simply relocate the problem or increase parking penalties
Reviewing this section of the road as a priority safety concern and assessing interim, practical measures that reduce risk, improve visibility and manage traffic flow more safely

These changes would significantly improve visibility, reduce conflict between oncoming vehicles, calm traffic naturally and lower the risk of further incidents. The aim is long-term safety, not short-term enforcement.

We urge the relevant authorities to assess this issue urgently and to work collaboratively with local residents to ensure Broomstick Hall Road is made safer, fairer and more predictable for everyone who uses it.
