The Issue

Living in Manhattan, Illinois, there's a prevailing atmosphere of concern that haunts our daily lives, an unease that strikes deep into the heart of our community. As parents, we continually face the daunting reality that our children cannot traverse the roads of our own town without peril. We've reached a point where it's no longer safe for our children to walk or cycle across major roads and intersections as they journey to school, parks, or friends' homes. For the safety and well-being of our children and community, this must change.

The critical roadways that service our town, particularly Illinois Route 52, Manhattan–Monee Road, and Cedar Road, have transformed into hazardous paths due to neglect and mismanagement by the State of Illinois and Will County. These roads, crucial arteries for our community’s growth and daily function, have sadly become synonymous with danger. The absence of proper safety measures, lack of pedestrian crossings, insufficient lighting, and deteriorating road conditions have combined to create an environment where accidents seem inevitable.

The growth of Manhattan has ironically fueled these concerns. Increased traffic has exponentially heightened the hazards as infrastructure improvements have not kept pace with development. The roads that should have been improved alongside the expansion of our town instead remain outdated and perilously inadequate.

We urgently call upon Governor Pritzker and the relevant officials to prioritize the safety of our community by implementing comprehensive road safety measures. This includes the installation of pedestrian crossings, effective maintenance and repair of roadway surfaces, adequate lighting, and, where necessary, revising speed limits to ensure safer travel for all our residents and commuters.

Statistics show that suburban towns implementing modern traffic control and pedestrian systems see a significant decrease in road accidents and casualties. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, proper road safety measures can reduce fatalities by up to 30%.

Our appeal is simple but pressing: Protect our families, sustain our growth responsibly, and safeguard our future by emboldening the safety standards of Manhattan's roadways.

We urge each member of our town and beyond, who is affected or touched by this issue, to join this urgent call for safety reform by signing this petition. Together, we can compel the authorities to take swift and decisive action to rectify these preventable safety failures. Make our roads safe again, for our sake and for the future we wish to secure for our children.

The Decision Makers

Mike Adrieansen
Manhattan Village President
Responded
“This is a heartbreaking tragedy, and our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the driver who lost their life this morning. Any loss of life on our roads is unacceptable. These recent fatal crashes have occurred on roads maintained by the State of Illinois through IDOT, and the Village has consistently pressed the state to address residents’ safety concerns, including meeting directly with state officials and IDOT on November 25, 2025. Following that meeting, traffic safety changes were implemented on state-maintained roads, and we will continue advocating for additional improvements to help prevent future tragedies.”
