Improve & Repaint Zebra and Pelican Crossings in Harlow, Essex

Improve & Repaint Zebra and Pelican Crossings in Harlow, Essex

The Issue

A few years back, a heartrending tragedy unfolded when a young child was knocked down outside Milwards Primary School in Harlow, Essex. The incident sparked immediate action, with a Zebra crossing installed outside the school. Yet, the majority of the crossings in Harlow finds themselves in a debilitating state today, urgently requiring repainting. These crossings become even more dangerous at night when visibility is significantly reduced. Having reported this urgent matter to the Essex County Council, the concerned authority has failed to act. Their inaction is a clear disregard of their 'Duty of Care.'

According to Road Safety GB, pedestrian fatalities occur mainly on urban roads, and over half of those recorded deaths occur at crossings. These statistics underline the importance and urgent need for safely maintained crossings. The repercussions of ignoring such issues can be disastrous as witnessed in the past here in Harlow.

In 2023, 405 pedestrians were killed in Great Britain, whilst 6,067 were reported to be seriously injured and 12,791 slightly injured. (Source www.gov.uk
