Improve Reno/Sparks Skateparks for the Benefit of the Young Generation
The Issue
I'm an individual deeply rooted in the skateboarding culture of Reno/Sparks area. From my childhood, I observed and partook in the joy, camaraderie, and personal growth that this community fosters. The skateparks in our area, however, have often been a topic of concern amidst my fellow skateboarders. Our shared dream is to see our state collaborate with skilled builders to create world-class skateparks that cater to all, but particularly help young talents thrive.
It is disheartening to note that despite a population of nearly 500,000, the resources available to the skateboarders in Reno and Sparks are far below satisfactory. In comparison, cities of similar size generally have a more significant number of facilities for skateboarding, an evidence of this is Fort Worth, Texas, with more than a dozen skateparks (National Skating Development Initiative, 2020).
But it's more than just about numbers. The need is for parks that offer diversity in terrains and meet safety standards – a factor that sadly, our state hasn’t given importance to. Compromising quality may pose a threat to our young skateboarders, leading to avoidable accidents and injuries.
Investment in better skateparks is an investment in our future generation. It would not only promote healthy lifestyle habits but also channel the energy of youth into a sport that teaches resilience, rewards perseverance and fosters a sense of community spirit.
We urge the local authorities in Reno and Sparks to recognize the value and potential of our skateboarding community and to take urgent action. Let us work together to develop state-of-the-art skateparks that will serve to motivate and aid the progress of our younger skateboarders. Please sign this petition and support our cause.
