Improving Recycling and Waste Management at NAU

The Issue

Sustainability is one of Northern Arizona University's biggest goals as a Green university, yet it hasn't found its way to where we most impact Coconino County - our waste footprint. This petition is to show Rita Cheng that students care about their impact on the environment, desiring recycling and waste collection to be done through a single collection department and to put funding into recycling education for students at NAU in an effort to further progress as a Green university and reduce our impact on the Northern Arizona region we call home.

Currently waste is managed by the departments that those receptacles are located in, which decreases the likelihood that recycling is disposed of separately from landfill waste. In addition to student ignorance on proper recycling techniques, these departments are throwing out recyclables as waste. By creating a department that handles the collection of receptacles around campus and putting more funding into recycling and waste education for first-year students living on campus, NAU could vastly reduce its footprint on the Flagstaff community as a waste contributor and give recyclable materials a second-chance outside of a landfill.

To reiterate, the goals of this initiative are to:

  • Increase recycling and waste education at Northern Arizona University for students living in campus-provided housing and first-year students.
  • Create an independent department to manage waste and recycle receptacle collection to prevent further neglect from departmental managed oversight.
