The Issue

I work in a recovery home in Dutchess County, where I witness firsthand the struggles faced by many women who are trying to rebuild their lives. These women have limited access to their jobs and are unable to visit their children as often as they should. The high cost of transportation, such as Lyft or Uber rides, is a major barrier for them. They cannot afford these services, and with no reliable public transportation system in place, they are left stranded.

For individuals in recovery, maintaining employment and family connections are crucial for stability and the prevention of relapses. A strong connection to family, particularly children, provides a moral and emotional backing that is irreplaceable. An efficient public transport system would empower these women, granting them the autonomy to visit their children and attend work without financial stress.

Dutchess County is known for its supportive community and vibrant local economy, yet its public transport infrastructure does not reflect these values. Currently, Dutchess County ranks low in public transportation accessibility compared to other similar regions. This inadequacy affects not only women in recovery homes but also low-income families, the elderly, and students who rely on public transit for commuting.

To address this glaring issue, we propose the following actionable solutions:

1. Increase the frequency and routes of buses, ensuring they align with peak job hours and school times, enabling smoother commutes.
2. Implement fare subsidies or free transit programs for low-income individuals and recovery home residents to decrease the economic burden.
3. Partner with local businesses and recovery programs to fund and support expanded routes.
4. Consider innovative solutions, such as a mini-bus service, designed to reach less accessible areas on demand.

Investing in public transportation is an investment in our community’s future. It supports economic growth, improves quality of life and ensures that every resident, regardless of their financial situation, has access to vital services. Sign this petition today and urge the local government to take immediate action in improving the public transportation system in Dutchess County. Let's work together to ensure everyone can access their essential daily needs. Your signature can help make a difference in supporting women striving for recovery and other residents in similar situations.

Please, sign this petition to advocate for change and enhance the public transportation system in Dutchess County.
