Improve public transportation access for PWDs in the Philippines

The Issue

Living in the bustling cities of the Philippines, the daily struggles of navigating public transportation as a person with disabilities (PWD) are all too real and heart-wrenching. Urban planning appears to overlook the needs of an essential part of the population - individuals who require facilities like ramps, elevators, and designated seating spaces to move around safely and comfortably.

In a country where 1.57% of the population is registered as persons with disabilities, it is startling to witness the lack of accessible public transportation options. Commuting in crowded jeepneys, buses without designated spaces or stops that are not equipped with the necessary ramps or lifts, the struggle for dignity and independence becomes an exhausting daily battle.

Our infrastructure needs immediate reimagining to better accommodate the PWD community, enabling them to lead a life with mobility and autonomy. Proper urban planning is crucial to ensuring everyone has equal access to public services, and including the perspectives of PWDs is necessary in any development discussions.

Our proposed solutions are concrete and actionable. The government and transportation agencies need to prioritize the modernization of current public transport systems. This includes retrofitting existing buses with ramps for wheelchair access, installing elevators in LRT and MRT stations, and enforcing policies that ensure all forms of public transit have seating areas reserved for PWDs.

Moreover, training programs for drivers and conductors should be standardized to comply with the needs of PWDs, sensitizing them to the challenges faced and ensuring they offer assistance and show respect. Proper law enforcement against those who overlook PWD seating and access will foster an environment of inclusivity.

By signing this petition, you are standing up for the rights of those who cannot always stand up for themselves. Together, we push for policies that transform our public transport into a bastion of accessibility for everyone. Sign and advocate for a more inclusive and forward-thinking approach to urban planning and public transport in Philippines.
