Improve Privacy and Accessibility in Financial Aid Office at Suny Oswego

The Issue

I have personally witnessed a serious and ongoing concern in the Financial Aid office of our institution. To respect our personal business and secure sensitive data, we are urged to approach advisors in an area with inadequate space and privacy. This not only disrespects our right to confidentiality but also creates an uncomfortable environment for sharing pivotal personal information.

As per the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, students are entitled to privacy with regards to their educational records. Our current reality, where other individuals can overhear these private discussions, is a clear violation of FERPA laws.

Likewise, this existing setup in the financial aid office doesn't comply with the standards outlined by the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). ADA's goal is to facilitate smooth access to services for all individuals, regardless of physical disabilities. Yet, the constrained space of our Financial Aid office inhibits this rightful ease of access.

Together, we need to advocate for the reinstatement of our rights: privacy in our financial aid discussions and proper access to these facilities for all students. Let's urge our institution to allocate more space to the Financial Aid office and ensure compliance with both FERPA and ADA regulations. Please lend your voice to this pivotal matter and sign our petition.
