Improve pedestrian safety in the Cove: Hale & Corning Four Corners
The Issue
Neighbors, I need your help!
The intersection at Hale Street and Corning Street around the church in the Cove is dangerous for pedestrians, especially our children. As many in our community know, this particular four-corners intersection poses a significant safety risk. The limited visibility near the curve by Beantrust exacerbates the dangers, compounded by multiple traffic merging, turning, or crossing points, including roads like Hale Street, Corning Street, East Corning Street, and Cross Street.
Imagine our children trying to cross here. With no safe crosswalk, they are left vulnerable to fast-moving vehicles that often do not expect them in this busy area. This intersection is part of my daily walk, and lately, I’ve witnessed far too many close calls, including some involving myself. I worry especially about the safety of our children, students walking to school, and kids riding their bikes through the area.
I am proposing adding a flashing crosswalk at this dangerous intersection. Such an improvement would not only increase visibility for drivers but also signal to them the presence of pedestrians. Flashing crosswalks have proven effective in similar suburban areas, dramatically lowering accident rates and ensuring pedestrian safety.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, implementing pedestrian-activated crossing signals can reduce pedestrian crashes by up to 40%. With such compelling data, it's evident that a similar solution could bring about much-needed safety improvements in the Cove.
We need the city of Beverly's support to implement these changes. Let's come together as a community to advocate for a safer environment for our families and friends.
Please consider signing the petition to help bring this safety concern to the attention of our local officials and start the conversation about installing a flashing crosswalk.
If you have additional concerns, ideas, or experiences to share, I’d love to hear from you. Feel free to send me a DM!
I would also be so grateful if you shared this with your neighbors, friends, and the greater Beverly community. The more voices we bring together, the harder it is for this important safety concern to go unheard.
