Improve pedestrian safety at Lake Minneola High School
The Issue
PETITION FOR STUDENT PEDESTRIAN SAFETY AT LMHS
Request for a Crossing Guard and Active Traffic Law Enforcement
To: Lake County Board of County Commissioners, Minneola City Council, Lake County School Board, and Lake County Sheriff's Office (LCSO)
We, the undersigned residents, parents, and concerned community members, petition our local government leaders and law enforcement officials to take immediate, coordinated action to improve pedestrian safety at Lake Minneola High School (LMHS).
Our Concerns
Students and families face safety concerns involving vehicle speeds, driver behavior, and students crossing the road near LMHS. Community members have expressed concerns about speeding vehicles and students who may not be paying attention while crossing. These conditions create a shared responsibility for drivers, pedestrians, school officials, local government, and law enforcement.
We should not have to wait for a serious injury or tragedy before taking reasonable steps to protect our students.
Our Requests
1. Establish a Crossing Guard at LMHS
We request that the Lake County School Board, City of Minneola, and Lake County Board of County Commissioners work together to determine jurisdiction, funding, and staffing responsibilities and establish an appropriately trained crossing guard at the location or locations where students need assistance crossing safely.
The responsible agencies should assess pedestrian traffic, identify the safest crossing locations, and implement a practical plan for coverage during student arrival and dismissal.
2. Active Traffic Enforcement by LCSO
We request that the Lake County Sheriff's Office actively enforce applicable traffic laws near LMHS, particularly during school arrival and dismissal periods.
Specifically, we ask LCSO to:
* Conduct regular traffic enforcement in the affected area.
* Issue citations when officers observe violations that warrant citations under applicable law.
* Enforce applicable speed limits, traffic-control devices, and laws requiring drivers to stop or yield to pedestrians.
* Address drivers who disregard posted signs and other traffic-control measures.
* Communicate enforcement efforts and safety recommendations to the community.
Warnings alone may not adequately deter repeated violations. Where the law supports a citation, we ask that enforcement be consistent and meaningful.
3. Coordinate a Joint Safety Plan
We request a coordinated assessment involving the City of Minneola, Lake County, the Lake County School Board, school representatives, and LCSO.
The agencies should clarify which entity is responsible for the roadway, crossing infrastructure, guard staffing, and enforcement. We also request a public update identifying the proposed safety measures, responsible agencies, funding arrangements, and anticipated implementation timeline.
4. Provide Accountability and Follow-Up
We ask the responsible agencies to provide a written response explaining what actions will be taken, what additional information or funding is needed, and when the community can expect an update.
If a crossing guard cannot be implemented immediately, we request interim safety measures and an explanation of the steps needed to make the position possible.
Our Position
Student safety should be a shared community priority. A crossing guard and active enforcement of existing traffic laws are practical steps toward reducing preventable risks around LMHS.
We recognize that students must also exercise caution when crossing the road. However, student awareness and responsible driving are not competing priorities. Both are necessary, and both should be supported through appropriate safety measures.
We respectfully ask our elected officials, school leaders, and law enforcement to work together and take action before a preventable incident changes a student's life or a family's future.
We urge the responsible agencies to acknowledge this petition, respond to these requests, and work with the community toward a safer environment for every student at Lake Minneola High School.
