The Issue

Every day, I walk my children to and from school across the intersection of Holt Avenue and Vanderlip Avenue. This route is not only popular among schoolchildren but also serves as a crucial pathway for our elderly neighbors and those commuting on foot. One disturbing fact looms over our daily journeys—there is no marked crosswalk, making this intersection perilous for pedestrians.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrian fatalities accounted for 17% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States in 2022. The lack of basic pedestrian infrastructure such as crosswalks significantly contributes to this worrying statistic. The intersection at Holt and Vanderlip is a glaring example of this neglect.

This area is heavily trafficked, not just by vehicles, but more importantly, by vulnerable pedestrians who include children and seniors. The absence of a marked crosswalk puts every person who crosses here at risk. Local studies suggest that marked crosswalks reduce pedestrian accidents by up to 40%, making them an essential safety feature we cannot afford to overlook.

The solution is simple and achievable: Install a marked crosswalk at this intersection. With clear demarcation lines, pedestrian warning signs, and possibly flashing lights, we can make this crossing safer for everyone. This will not only enhance the safety of our community but also encourage walking, promoting a healthier lifestyle while reducing our carbon footprint.

Let's rally as a community and demand change for the safety and well-being of all pedestrians in our neighborhood. The time for action is now before another preventable accident occurs. Please sign this petition to urge the local government to prioritize the installation of a marked crosswalk at Holt Avenue and Vanderlip Avenue. Together, we can make our streets safer for everyone.

Responded
“Thank you for this. Unfortunately, I am not a decision-maker on this issue. The intersection in question is in the unincorporated county, not the city limits of Tustin. I am, however, happy to forward this to Vince Sarmiento, the County Supervisor for the area. Lee K.
