The Issue

As a person intimately connected with individuals who have worked or lived within the foster care system, the need for better mental health care for foster children is not an abstract concept, but a devastating reality. The foster care system is home to approximately 423,000 children on any given day in the United States alone (Source: AFCARS report, 2020), and studies suggest that nearly half of these children suffer from a substantial mental health issue (Source: AACAP). This harsh reality, these bare-faced statistics, show that the quality and accessibility of mental health resources provided to these children is simply not enough.

Improving mental health care for foster children is not only a necessity, but it has an extreme impact on the future. These young individuals in the foster care system have been subjected to many experiences that can negatively impact their mental health for years to come. With advanced mental health services, these children have the potential to heal, thrive, and live fulfilling lives.

Therefore, this petition seeks to request policymakers, child protection agencies, and anyone concerned to take steps to boost the provision of mental health care for foster children. It is dependent upon us, as a society, to ensure that their mental health needs are met effectively. Please sign this petition to show your support for better mental health care for foster children.
