Animal welfare is deeply personal to me because I've seen firsthand how compassion and care can transform an animal's life. Growing up, I had a rescue dog who came from a background of neglect. When he first joined our family, he was frightened and hesitant, a shadow of the vibrant, loving pet he became. With time, patience, and kindness, we watched him bloom into a joyful, loyal friend.

This experience opened my eyes to the importance of treating all animals with respect and empathy. Animals, whether in our homes, on farms, or in the wild, deserve safety, care, and compassion. It’s heartbreaking to know that so many animals suffer simply because they lack the protection and advocacy they need.

This petition is crucial because it aims to strengthen protections for animals, ensuring they are treated humanely and with dignity. By supporting this cause, we can help prevent unnecessary suffering and make a difference in the lives of countless animals. I believe that, together, we can create a world where animals are respected and cared for as they deserve to

Ever since I was young, my family had a tradition to care for those who couldn't fend for themselves — people, plants, birds, animals. I remember the cold winter when we found a shivering, lonely puppy outside our home. We nurtured him back to health and named him Benji; he became a part of our family. It was Benji's rescue story and the many stories like that which sparked my passion for improving animal welfare. However, not all animals are as fortunate as Benji. The prevalence of animal cruelty and neglect I've witnessed firsthand has propelled me to push for change.

In the United States alone, there are approximately 6.5 million animals entering shelters every year (ASPCA). However, it is estimated only around 50% of shelters in the U.S. are required, by their own voluntary policies, to provide basic veterinary care. Legislation to protect animals from cruelty is lacking not only in rigor but in enforceability. It is clear we need a paradigm shift in the legal protections awarded to animals.
