Improve Highway Safety on Teton Pass, WY
The Issue
We the undersigned feel strongly there is an immediate need to improve highway safety conditions on Teton Pass. We, therefore, ask that our state and community elected officials, the staff of appropriate agencies, and others please work together to make significant change to imporve safety on the Teton Pass highway.

Our Rationale: Highway 22 over Teton Pass is notorious for its steep grades and sharp curves, coupled with heavy snowfall and adverse weather conditions, making it a particularly hazardous route. Incidents involving human injury and death have occurred since the roadway opened in the late 1960s. According to the Wyoming Department of Transportation, accidents in this area have increased by 20% over the last five years alone, a startling statistic that underlines the urgent need for change. According to the 2024 Teton Pass Corridor Study of the Federal Highway Commission, during the five-year period from 2016 to 2020 there were eight fatal crashes, 60 injury crashes, 78 intersection-related crashes, and 244 property-damage-only crashes—an average of 62 crashes of all types each year. Since 2020, there have been three additional fatalities with one involving a motorhome/RV in 2024. The deaths of David Page and Nicolaus “Nick” Besobrasow on July 7th are the most recent. Just days after the July 7th crash, an RV towing an oversized trailer lost its brakes, crossed into oncoming traffic, and came to a stop just beyond downtown Wilson with its wheels ablaze.
These incidents affect not only those who are killed or injured but also many others whose lives are changed by these events. Wilson resident Randy Roberts had a near-death experience in 2024 when a runaway RV crashed into the Exxon station in downtown Wilson, narrowly missing the gas pumps. In 2025 during their morning commute, Ryan and Salene Freeman were side swiped by a runaway box truck with brake failure, which totalled their vehicle and damaged three others. “I am afraid every morning I drive to work,” said Ryan Freeman.
