Cancer is a disease that not only affects the patient, but also sends ripples through their family, friends, and community. 

In 2020, Cancer Research UK reported that Welsh residents had a 1 in 2 chance of developing cancer in their lifetime. Further, a study published in the Lancet Oncology in 2019 estimated that 18% of cancers in the UK arise due to inherited faulty genes. Yet, many are still unaware of their genetic predispositions, principally due to inadequate genetic testing availability and accessibility.

This is why I urge our leaders to expand genetic testing across Wales. Accomplishing this will improve detection and mapping of cancers, provide support to relatives of cancer survivors, and moce towards preventative healthcare for citizens identified with faulty genes. It's critical that we arm our healthcare system with the necessary tools for early cancer detection and effective prevention strategies, which begin with improved genetic testing.
