"World class education" is a promise that Prince William County schools, particularly Colgan High School, claim to offer every student. However, when it comes to foreign languages such as American Sign Language (ASL) and German, the reality falls significantly short of the mark.

I'm writing this petition because I am personally affected by the shortcomings in the foreign language curriculum at Colgan High School. In the ASL class, the current program is to rely solely on an online learning platform without a qualified teacher present to guide the students. This self-taught approach is not conducive to effective learning, especially for a language as nuanced and expressive as ASL. Without proper instruction, students are left without meaningful learning experiences, struggling to gain proficiency.

Furthermore, German classes face a similar issue, where the course is available online only. This program requires students to complete their studies at home or during the summer, often with an additional cost. This pay-to-learn model is not only financially burdensome but also denies students equal access to holistic education as promised by the school.

Education is the foundation for success and a driving force for future opportunities. Language learning should be accessible and structured to ensure all students can efficiently learn and benefit. The lack of proper instruction undermines the educational promises made by Prince William County schools and hinders students' ability to attain the level of education they deserve.

The solution to this issue is clear: Colgan High School must provide in-person, qualified teachers for all foreign language courses, ensuring a comprehensive and interactive learning experience. This includes hiring certified ASL and German teachers who can provide students with the direct instruction and feedback necessary to truly understand and master these languages.
