Improve food variety and quality at Boston College dining halls
The Issue
Every day, students at Boston College enter the Lower Dining Hall for dinner with hopes of enjoying a nutritious and satisfying meal. Unfortunately, what we repeatedly encounter is a monotonous menu with poor quality that makes dining an unpleasant necessity rather than a pleasurable experience. For many of us, this isn’t just an inconvenience, it's affecting our health. I, like many other students, am experiencing adverse effects from the excessive salt and lack of variety in the food served.
Boston College prides itself on a holistic approach to student care, and providing healthy, diverse, and appealing dining options should be considered an integral part of this mission. With students from a multitude of backgrounds, representing varying cultures and dietary needs, our dining options should reflect this diversity and promote well-being.
According to a 2023 report from the National Association of College & University Food Services, diverse and nutritional dining options positively impact student satisfaction rates and health outcomes. Schools that have embraced a varied approach to their dining services have noted higher student retention rates and improved student wellness.
We propose the following actionable changes:
1. Launch a monthly menu rotation that includes a variety of cuisines, accommodating preferences such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and international options.
2. Implement student feedback sessions regarding menu satisfaction, with the aim of fostering transparent communication and continuous improvement.
While these steps may require initial investment and planning, the long-term benefits in terms of student health, satisfaction, and overall campus atmosphere are well worth the effort.
Eating should not only fuel our bodies but also enrich our daily lives. By signing this petition, you support the call for Boston College to commit to improving the dining experience, ensuring it meets the needs and expectations of its student community. Let's work together for a dining option that truly reflects our diverse and esteemed student body. Sign and make a difference!
