The Issue

I've spent the last seven months on the road as a truck driver, and during this time, one thing has become abundantly clear to me: the lack of healthy food and fitness options at truck stops is a major issue. As truck drivers, we spend countless hours behind the wheel, work irregular shifts, and often have to sleep in our trucks. With limited time and energy, we rely heavily on truck stops for meals and other essentials. Unfortunately, the choices available are rarely conducive to a healthy lifestyle.

Truck stops are critical hubs for drivers like me, providing not only a place to refuel but also a place to rest and recharge. While they offer a range of fast food and convenience items, they often fall short in offering nutritious meals and facilities for physical activity. This can have a serious impact on our health and wellbeing over time, leading to issues such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.

I'm not suggesting that truck stops remove the comfort foods that many people enjoy; rather, I'm calling for an expansion of the options available. By offering more fresh produce, salads, lean protein options, and whole grain food items, truck stops can help drivers to maintain better health while on the road. Additionally, providing fitness facilities such as well-maintained walking trails, small gyms, or spaces for stretching can do wonders for a driver's physical health and mental well-being.

Studies have shown that a healthier diet and regular exercise can prevent chronic diseases and lead to longer, more productive lives. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 70% of truck drivers are overweight, and as per National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, they are at risk for health conditions related to physical inactivity. Making healthy food and fitness facilities accessible at truck stops can contribute to enhancing the quality of life for a profession that is vital to our supply chain and economy.

We need the owners and operators of truck stops to recognize the importance of these changes and make the commitment to providing healthier food choices and exercise facilities. Their commitment can lead to a healthier, more vibrant community of truck drivers who are better able to handle the demanding nature of their work.

Please sign this petition to urge truck stop operators to offer better food and fitness options for truck drivers. Together, we can take a stand for the health and well-being of those who keep our country moving.
