The Issue

Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley, California, is a cherished sanctuary for birds and wildlife, offering a glimpse of the diverse ecosystem found within our community. However, unrestrained and poorly regulated fishing practices are putting our precious wildlife at risk; birds are becoming entangled in fishing lines, and aquatic animals are being inadvertently captured, injured, or killed.

This petition calls for strict enforcement of environmentally conscious fishing regulations to protect the flora and fauna that call Mile Square Park their home. In order to preserve the ecological balance and ensure the safety of wildlife, it is imperative to implement measures such as designated fishing areas, mandatory use of wildlife-safe fishing gear, and increased supervision and enforcement of park rules.

According to the International Bird Rescue, many thousands of birds are injured annually worldwide due to fishing-related accidents. At Mile Square Park, local groups have reported a distressing increase in incidents of injured birds and wildlife within the past year alone. Without prompt action, we risk causing irreversible damage to the park's ecosystem.

Our community must step up and safeguard our environmental heritage. By signing this petition, you are urging the OC Parks and Recreation Department to take necessary steps to revise current fishing regulations towards wildlife protection, conduct regular patrols to ensure compliance, and set up educational programs to raise awareness among fishermen and park visitors.

Let us act now to ensure that Mile Square Park remains a safe haven for wildlife. Sign this petition and help protect the natural inhabitants of our beloved Mile Square Park from the dangers posed by unregulated fishing practices.
