Growing up in Amarillo, my sister and I spent countless hours exploring the wonders of the Amarillo Zoo. It was a place that sparked our curiosity, inspired our respect for nature, and filled us with joy. However, it's heartbreaking to see that the zoo we once loved is now struggling due to lack of resources.

The animals at Amarillo Zoo deserve better. They deserve habitats that mimic their natural environments as closely as possible. They need regular veterinary care and a balanced diet suitable for their species. Currently, these basic necessities are not being met due to financial constraints.

According to the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), zoos should provide animals with environments that meet their physical and psychological needs. Unfortunately, this standard is not being upheld at Amarillo Zoo.

Furthermore, it's important to note that unlike many other cities in Texas such as Houston or Dallas where zoos receive city funding, Amarillo does not fund its zoo which exacerbates these issues further.

We believe it's time for change - both for the sake of the animals who call this zoo home and for future generations who will visit this beloved institution in our community.

We urge local government officials in Amarillo to allocate necessary funds towards improving conditions at our local zoo so every animal can live comfortably while also providing an educational resource about wildlife conservation for visitors.
