Improve communication between Norfolk Southern and our community
The Issue
New Haven has always been a railroad community. Residents understand and accept that trains are part of our city’s history, economy, and identity. This petition is not an attempt to stop railroad operations.
However, train lengths have increased dramatically over the years. It is now common for trains exceeding 200 cars to block multiple crossings simultaneously, sometimes for hours at a time. Combined with ongoing road construction and limited alternative routes, these blockages can effectively trap residents within portions of the community and restrict access to work, school, medical care, businesses, and emergency services.
Residents should not be forced to choose between preserving their community and maintaining reasonable access to it. Large-scale infrastructure projects such as overpasses and underpasses may require the demolition of homes, businesses, and historic properties that contribute to the character and heritage of New Haven. We believe solutions should first focus on preventing unnecessary and prolonged blockages rather than permanently altering the community.
We are asking Norfolk Southern, transportation officials, and elected leaders to work together to:
• Reduce the frequency and duration of extended crossing blockages.
• Avoid stopping trains in ways that block all major access points into and out of affected neighborhoods whenever possible.
• Improve communication with local officials regarding extended delays and operational changes.
• Review the impact of modern train lengths on communities such as New Haven and identify reasonable operational solutions.
• Prioritize public safety, emergency access, and community mobility when making operational decisions.
New Haven residents are not asking for special treatment. We are asking for common-sense solutions that recognize the needs of both the railroad and the people who live, work, and raise families here.
