Improve Child Protective Services

The Issue

Leiliana Wright, a young innocent soul, tragically lost her life at just 4 years old due to unspeakable abuse inflicted by her mother and her mother's boyfriend. Despite family members expressing concerns and warning child protective services, she was never removed from the dangerous environment. Similarly, Gabriel Fernandez suffered a heartbreaking fate, enduring abuse at the hands of his mother and her partner, with school staff failing to take appropriate action even when obvious signs of harm were present.

Zymere Perkins met a devastating end, falling victim to the violence of Rysheim Smith. The system failed him, leaving him vulnerable and defenseless. Ciera, Abigail, Jeremiah, Devonte, Hannah, and Markis faced a heartbreaking tragedy, losing their lives in a murder-suicide. Although the mothers took responsibility for the abuse, the children were still in their custody, highlighting the urgent need for reform and protection for these vulnerable youngsters.

Social workers and caseworkers bear a heavy burden, with overwhelming case loads and inadequate resources. Their noble intentions to protect children often clash with the harsh realities of their demanding and underpaid roles. To safeguard the lives of these at-risk children, we must address the systemic issues that hinder the effectiveness of child protective services.

Better distribution of cases and increased compensation for these devoted professionals are essential steps toward fostering a safer environment for the children they serve. We cannot turn a blind eye to this crisis, as the consequences are devastating and, in many cases, could be preventable with the right support.
