The Issue

Like many people in North Lanarkshire, I have felt unsafe walking or exercising in poorly lit parks and pathways. This is particularly concerning due to recent attacks on women, which have heightened our fears and made many of us question whether our parks and walkways are truly safe. As residents of North Lanarkshire, we deserve to feel secure in our local communities.

North Lanarkshire's parks and walkways are cherished spaces where we connect with nature, exercise, and spend quality time with family and friends. However, the lack of adequate lighting and CCTV coverage significantly undermines their safety, especially after dark. The reality is that poorly lit and unmonitored areas are breeding grounds for criminal activities, leaving citizens, especially women, vulnerable to attacks.

According to statistics, well-lit areas with CCTV surveillance have shown a considerable decrease in crime rates across various urban settings. Research suggests that improved lighting can reduce crime by up to 39%, while effective CCTV systems not only deter criminal behavior but also assist law enforcement in apprehending offenders. In light of these facts, it is imperative that North Lanarkshire invests in upgrading the security measures in our parks and walkways.

We call on the North Lanarkshire Council to take immediate action to enhance the safety and security of our public spaces by installing more comprehensive CCTV systems and upgrading current lighting infrastructure. By doing so, we can protect our community, prevent further tragedies, and ensure that everyone can enjoy these spaces without fear.

Please, join us in urging our local government to prioritize the safety of North Lanarkshire's residents. Sign this petition to demand better lighting and CCTV coverage in our parks and walkways. Your support can lead to meaningful change and help keep our community safe.
