The Issue

My heart breaks as I witness our elderly pensioners having to stand in long queues at clinics, shopping malls, and other public service points. It's disheartening and a true disgrace to see that this is how we honour those who have spent their entire lives building the foundations on which we stand today. Our elders deserve respect, compassion, and dignity—yet, what they receive is far from it.

The abuse and bullying they face, both in public spaces and within their own homes, particularly over their Sassa grants, is unacceptable. We must offer them greater protection and ensure retirement communities are safe havens where they aren't forced to live with individuals who exploit or harm them. Policies must be enacted to prevent children or grandchildren from residing in retirement villages or homes with the elderly.

In addition to safety, the comfort and well-being of our seniors are paramount. It's unsettling to know that retirement homes are sometimes left without basic necessities like water and electricity. Pensions, which should last the month, are barely sufficient to cover rent, utilities, and groceries. How, then, can we expect them to afford transportation or medical services, let alone to attend church or engage in community activities?

Many elders are forced to travel by uncomfortable taxis to receive essential healthcare. This only increases their vulnerabilities and diminishes their quality of life. We must demand better for our elders. Affordable and accessible transportation from point A to Z is essential, ensuring that visits to hospitals and clinics do not become burdensome or dangerous journeys.

Let's rally for change and ensure that public policies transform to support and cherish our elderly, granting them the peace and respect they have rightfully earned. Compassion is free and it is beautiful. Let's show our elders that we, as a society, uphold these values.

Please sign this petition to enact meaningful change for our cherished pensioners.
