The Issue

Manchester, known for its vibrant culture and dynamic city life, is facing a growing issue regarding the safety and convenience of cycling. As the city aims to promote sustainable transportation and reduce its carbon footprint, an increasing number of residents and visitors are choosing bicycles as their primary mode of transport. However, the lack of secure and accessible bike storage facilities poses a significant barrier to potential cyclists. I want to make a suggestion to the council to inform them of the need for greater investment in infrastructure and security for Manchester's cyclists and support Manchester's transport and environmental goals.

To Manchester City Council,

I am writing as part of my GCSE Citizenship project to raise concerns about cycling safety and bike security in Manchester. Through a survey I conducted, many local residents said they are worried about bike theft and believe there is not enough secure bike storage available. A large number of respondents also said they would cycle more often if safer cycling lanes and secure parking were provided.

Cycling is an environmentally friendly and healthy way to travel, but people may feel discouraged from cycling if they believe their bikes are not safe or if cycling routes feel dangerous.

I would like to propose that Manchester City Council consider increasing investment in protected cycle lanes and secure bike storage facilities across the city. Improving these facilities could encourage more people to cycle, reduce traffic congestion, and support Manchester’s environmental goals.

This petition shows that there is public support for improving cycling infrastructure in Manchester. I hope the council will consider these concerns and explore ways to make cycling safer and more accessible for residents.
