The Issue

In recent years, living in Bengaluru has become both a daily challenge and a test of patience. Those of us who depend on footpaths, particularly persons with disabilities and the elderly, face the brunt of this challenge. The city's sidewalks, meant for safe pedestrian movement, are now crowded with makeshift stalls and encroachments by street vendors and commercial establishments. This misuse of public space does not just inconvenience but also endangers pedestrians every single day.

I am deeply concerned about the current state of footpaths across Bengaluru, especially when considering the needs of disabled individuals who find it difficult to navigate these congested paths. Lack of accessibility-friendly footpaths restricts their freedom and independence, essentially barring them from participating fully in society. Our city, known for its technological advances, is ironically failing to cater to the basic infrastructural requirements of all its citizens.

[According to the 2011 Census](https://censusindia.gov.in/ Bengaluru is home to over 100,000 persons with disabilities. Furthermore, with a rapidly growing population, the demand for safe pedestrian spaces is more pressing than ever. Cities worldwide are moving towards pedestrian-friendly urban planning. It's high time Bengaluru follows suit to ensure a better quality of life for its residents.

Firstly, strict enforcement of laws to prevent any form of illegal encroachment on the footpaths would be a significant step forward. The Penal Code and local regulations concerning encroachment must be applied firmly to protect pedestrian rights. Secondly, the city needs to invest in making footpaths accessible; this includes ensuring even, smooth surfaces, ramps for wheelchairs, and tactile paving for the visually impaired.

I urge the concerned authorities, including the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), to take immediate and decisive action. Let's work together to reclaim our footpaths and make them accessible and safe for everyone.

Please sign this petition to demand better, inclusive, and protected footpaths in Bengaluru. Together, we can make a difference.
