The issue
I've been navigating the mental health system in Victoria ever since my teens, grappling with severe Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD), PTSD, and other mental health challenges. I'm now 42 and find myself unable to work, owing to a myriad of untreated conditions. The current system seems tailored only for those who can afford tens of thousands of dollars, leaving countless others like me unable to access proper trauma treatment.
My life has been a constant struggle of trialling medications and seeking help, often with little effective outcome. I've watched years slip by, a casualty of a system that simply doesn't cater to the financially disadvantaged. Coupled with this, the awareness around conditions like Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) remains abysmally low. It took more than 12 months for me to receive a diagnosis of PMDD, during which time my mental health deteriorated greatly and I faced job losses.
This petition calls for immediate and sustainable reforms in the Victorian mental health system. We need a system that provides equal access to appropriate treatment for all individuals, regardless of their financial situation. This includes increased funding for mental health services, particularly for trauma-focused therapy and treatment for conditions like PMDD.
Furthermore, there is an urgent need for better education and awareness around mental health disorders like PMDD, CPTSD, and PTSD. These conditions deeply affect one's capacity to lead a normal life and yet remain underdiagnosed and often misunderstood within our healthcare framework.
We call upon the Victorian government to implement:
1. Subsidised mental health programs specifically targeting trauma and complex psychological disorders.
2. Better training for healthcare providers to ensure timely and accurate diagnosis of lesser-known disorders.
3. Public campaigns aimed at raising awareness and debunking myths around mental health conditions.
Every person deserves the chance to live a fulfilling life, unshackled by inaccessible healthcare. Help us drive the change that can save and improve lives. Please sign this petition to demand an overhaul of the mental health system in Victoria, and help bring about equal access to mental health care for all.
