The issue

Areola tattooing is the final step in the breast reconstruction process for many individuals recovering from breast cancer, as well as for those who have undergone gender affirming surgeries.

This procedure plays a critical role in helping patients feel whole again after major surgery. Despite this, many patients in Alberta are not aware that this service exists, and access to publicly funded care is extremely limited.

While areola tattooing may be covered when performed by a surgeon, surgeons are already facing long waitlists and do not typically have the time or specialized training to provide this service. As a result, many patients are left to find care on their own and pay out of pocket.

There are qualified medical tattoo practitioners in Alberta who provide this service safely and professionally, yet there is currently no pathway for them to be recognized within the healthcare system.

We are calling on the Government of Alberta to improve access to areola tattooing services by recognizing qualified providers, allowing physician referrals, and ensuring patients can access coverage without financial barriers.

This is not just about aesthetics. It is about dignity, recovery, and completing the journey after cancer and surgery.

Please sign to support better access for patients in Alberta.
