Impose Stricter Regulations on WestRock/Smurfit to Protect the Watershed

Impose Stricter Regulations on WestRock/Smurfit to Protect the Watershed

The Issue

As someone deeply connected to the serene environment of the Jackson River and Upper James, We are heartbroken to see the once-clear waters darken to a concerning, unnatural black. During recent years, the tranquility of our rivers has been disrupted, the water quality plummeting as the vibrant wildlife struggle to survive. You can see the toll such pollution is taking. Multiple species of fish and other wildlife are dying off, the devastating result of "accidental spills" from outdated industrial plants. Accidental or not, the incidences are damaging the waters we hold dear, turning them toxic and threatening the wildlife that call them home.

Our rivers' tributaries demand cleaner, safer waters that do not jeopardize their inhabitants. To this end, we need to implement stricter regulations starting on the Jackson River, James River, and Chesepeake Bay Watershed. As concerned citizens, we call for regular testing of the Jackson River downstream of WestRock/Smurfit for chemicals, contaminants, and dissolved oxygen levels. Accountability is paramount, and action must be taken against any pollutant spill or discharge into the watershed. Regardless of whether these spills are deemed accidental or negligent, they're damaging our sacred waters.

The time has come to act. Let's save our rivers and preserve the tranquil corners of our world before it's too late. Please sign this petition to protect our rivers and the creatures that rely on them so heavily.
