Anas al-Sharif, brave and renowned 28-year-old journalist from Jabalia, north Gaza, was targeted and killed by an Israeli airstrike on a journalist tent at the main gate of al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.

The Israeli attack killed five Al Jazeera journalists: Anas al-Sharif & Mohammed Qreiqeh, and camera operators Ibrahim Zahir, Mohammed Nofal, and Moamen Aliwa. The IOF issued a statement confirming they killed Anas, repeating the false claim that he was a Hamas fighter.

Anas spent his last minutes reporting, tweeting a video of intense Israeli bombings just minutes before his own murder.

From the start of the genocide, Anas has risked his life to expose Israel’s brutal genocide in Gaza. During most of this time, he’d been separated from his family, sacrificing his precious time with him so he can deliver the truth to the world and to us. He leaves behind his wife, Bayan, and two young children, Sham and Salah.

Israel put Anas and other journalists on an official death list in 2024, falsely accusing him of Hamas membership. This is part of Israel’s longstanding policy of killing journalists. Two weeks ago, Israel’s army spokesman reshared a video, again accusing Anas of being a member of Hamas’s military wing. Israel has killed over 230 journalists and media workers during the genocide, far surpassing journalist kill counts from every documented war and genocide.

Anas was killed for insisting on showing us the truth. For demanding that we do something. The only way to honor his life is to take action, to hold accountable those complicit, and stand up for Gaza and Palestine.

Anas al-Sharif from north Gaza. May he rest in power. الله يرحمه
