Hands off Lebanon, we want Netanyahu gone!" rang out across Whitehall during last night's protest in London. The chant reflects the anger stirred by Israel's indiscriminate killing of over 700 people in Lebanon this week. It also reflects the fact that the Israeli leader is hell-bent on initiating an all-out war in the Middle East to protect his precarious position and draw the US into fighting a regional war alongside it.
As has been the case for decades, Israel is completely isolated in the region - a situation that's been exacerbated by its bombing of Gaza, the West Bank, Iran, Syria, Yemen and Lebanon in the past 12 months. The only lifeline Israel has is the funding and support of the Western powers, support the US is only too willing to provide.
This week, Israel announced that it had reached an agreement with the Biden administration for $8.7 billion to support its ongoing horrors. What timing. Such a move extinguishes any doubts that the US are wholeheartedly behind what Israel is currently carrying out.
Closer to home, Labour's leadership demonstrated its support for Israel's warmongering at its conference this week with Rachel Reeves and Angela Rayner both speaking alongside Israeli Ambassador, Tzipi “there is no humanitarian crisis” Hotovely, at a Labour Friends of Israel meeting.
As Lindsey German wrote in her article on the conference at the start of the week:
"Labour’s foreign policy is not about “fighting terrorism” or “promoting democracy” as its minsters try to proclaim. It is about promoting the needs of British imperialism, in lockstep with that of the US, including military interventions and huge levels of arms sales. If that means supporting a terror state like Israel, or refusing to countenance a ceasefire and peace talks in Ukraine, that goes with the territory.
Protesters have been out in force against the genocide in Gaza for a year now. We are having an impact, most recently when the TUC supported resolutions on Palestine and wider Middle East war. Stop the War wants to take the movement more deeply into the unions, and link it with the Nato proxy war in Ukraine, the new arms race which is threatening the future of humanity, and the growing threat of wider war."
Most immediately that starts with next Saturday's demo marking one year of genocide in Gaza. Please do all you can between now and then to build for the demo including joining our mass leafleting day this Wednesday (2 October).
