I am writing this petition with a heavy heart and a burning need for change. Every week, I witness someone I know being affected by drugs. I've endured the excruciating pain of watching friends and family mourn the loss of their loved ones caused by fatal overdoses. For those fortunate enough to still be alive, it is equally tormenting to watch them progressively deteriorate, as the drugs transform them into unrecognizable shadows of their former selves.

As per the data, 7525 drug overdose deaths were reported in Canada in 2022, equating to a rate of 19.3 deaths per 100,000 population. This ascended to 21.2 in the first half of 2023. However, this number only symbolizes the 'reported' fatalities. Yet, why aren't drug dealers — who supply these lethal substances — being charged with murder?

We need our penal charges to reflect the gravity of the crime. By viewing and treating drug distribution as a murder, we might be able to deter drug dealers and intensify the campaign against drug trafficking. This change in legal perspective is not just a matter of justice — it's a matter of public safety.
